Record voice, video, and screen messages

Record voice, video, and screen messages

Some things land better as a voice note or a quick screen walkthrough than as a wall of text. Every channel in upcoach has a built-in recorder, so you can capture audio, video, or your screen and send it without leaving the conversation.

Before you begin

  • Open a channel where you can post messages
  • Allow your browser to access your microphone, camera, or screen when prompted
  • Recordings are capped at 3 minutes each

Find the recording controls

The three recording buttons sit on the right side of the message input, next to the attachment menu.

IconWhat it does
MicrophoneRecord a voice message
VideoRecord yourself with the camera
ScreenRecord your screen, with optional audio

If a button is greyed out, hover it for the reason. The most common ones are “Recording not supported” (an older browser) and “Screen capture not supported” (mobile browsers and a few desktop browsers don’t allow it).

Record a voice message

  1. Click the microphone icon.
  2. Approve the microphone permission if your browser asks.
  3. Speak — the recorder shows a live audio level visualizer and a timer that counts up to 3:00.
  4. Click Stop Recording when you’re done, or Cancel to throw it away.

After you stop, you’ll see the Voice message preview card with a waveform you can play back.

Record a video

  1. Click the video icon.
  2. Approve the camera and microphone permissions.
  3. The recorder opens with a live preview from your camera. The preview is muted on your end so it doesn’t echo, but the recording captures both your video and your voice.
  4. Click Stop Recording when you’re finished.

The preview card shows the recording in a video player titled Video preview, with playback controls.

Record your screen

  1. Click the screen icon.
  2. Pick what to capture as audio:
    • No audio — Screen only
    • Microphone — Add voice narration
    • System audio — Capture audio playing on your computer (Chrome only)
    • Both — Mic plus system audio
  3. Choose which screen, window, or browser tab to share when your browser prompts you.
  4. Click Stop Recording when finished. The browser’s “Stop sharing” button works too.

The preview card is labelled Screen recording preview and behaves like the video preview.

Review, re-record, or send

Every recording flow ends on the same preview card with three actions:

  • Cancel — discard the recording
  • Re-record — throw it away and start the same recording type fresh
  • Send — upload and post it as a message

While the file uploads, the Send button shows a progress bar and the label switches to “Sending…”. Don’t close the tab until it finishes.

Recording timer and warnings

The header above the recorder shows the elapsed time and the cap, e.g. 2:42 / 3:00. As you approach the limit:

  • The progress bar turns amber
  • A warning appears: “Recording will stop in N seconds”
  • At 3:00 the recorder stops on its own and drops you on the preview card

When recordings don’t appear

  • No microphone or camera prompt — your browser may have remembered an earlier “Block” choice. Open the site permissions in your browser’s address bar and reset them, then click the recording button again.
  • “Storage limit” warning — your organization is close to its file storage cap. The recording still sends, but consider clearing out old uploads in the Media Library.
  • Screen recording isn’t an option on mobile — browser vendors don’t expose screen capture on phones and tablets. Record from a desktop browser instead.
