Set up conditions and prerequisites for content
Prerequisites let you control the order participants move through your curriculum. When a module has required modules, participants must complete those first — otherwise the module appears locked.
This is useful for programs where concepts build on each other, like a bootcamp with progressive skill levels or a certification with gated assessments.
Before you begin
- You need at least two modules in a section (prerequisites work between modules within the same section)
- Your program should have a Coaching & Learning app with sections and modules already created
Add prerequisites to a module
- Inside your program, open a section in the Coaching & Learning app
- Click the three-dot menu on a module and select Edit Module
- Toggle on Required Module(s)
- Search for and select the modules that must be completed first
- Click Update Module
You can select multiple required modules. The participant must finish all of them before the locked module becomes available.
How participants see locked modules
When a module has unfinished prerequisites:
- A lock icon appears next to the module title
- The module’s activities are dimmed and not clickable
- A message reads “Module is locked!” with a link to “See what’s required to unlock”
- Clicking that link shows the list of required modules and their completion status
Once all required modules are complete, the lock disappears and participants can access the content.
How admins see prerequisites
Admins always have full access to every module, regardless of prerequisites. For modules with conditions set:
- A lock icon appears next to the module title
- A note below reads “Requires other module(s)” with a “Change Requirements” link
- Clicking that link opens the module editor where you can adjust the prerequisites
Ordering considerations
If a required module appears after the module it unlocks (for example, Module 3 requires Module 5), a warning appears in the module editor. The flagged modules show in amber with a flag icon, and a tooltip suggests reordering for a more linear flow.
This is a warning, not a blocker — the prerequisite still works regardless of order. But participants may find it confusing to see a locked module before the modules they need to complete.
Combining prerequisites with scheduled releases
Prerequisites and scheduled content releases work together. A section can have a release date that controls when content becomes visible, while prerequisites within that section control what order participants work through it.
For example, a bootcamp might release Week 2 on a specific date (scheduled release), and within Week 2, require participants to finish the “Theory” module before unlocking the “Practice Lab” module (prerequisites).
